5 tips for producing creative videos with tight response times

As a freelancer in creative video production, your reputation means everything to you. Without it, your business would certainly fail. Fortunately, your reputation is generally based on two things that are already in your control, the quality of the work you produce and your ability to meet deadlines. 1. Stay focused on the deadline

The first step in making sure you meet your client’s deadlines is to simply worry about their performance by completing work within the deadline. Once your deadline is a priority, you are more likely to make a serious effort to meet it. To make sure you meet your deadlines, consider missing one as a cardinal sin. Once you have established this habit, the rest is just a matter of logistics.

2. Keep an up-to-date list of projects and deadlines

One way to ensure that you never miss a set project completion date is to keep a list or spreadsheet of all your current projects, their status to date, and their expected due date. Depending on the skills of your organization, you can even color-coordinate this list to show what stage of development each project is currently at. Alternatively, this could be an online list or spreadsheet, or just a paper list. Which tool you use doesn’t matter as long as you keep track.

3. Communicate clearly

One of the reasons why many freelancers miss their deadlines is that they do not clearly communicate their expectations with the client. When the deadline is fuzzy, it will be much more difficult to reach it. Instead, be clear when setting your deadline and explaining your process. If the client does not mention a deadline, do not forget to request it.

4. Treat yourself to a cushion

Yet another way to ensure that you are completing and turning in your work on time is to build a cushion. Basically, this means that you give yourself a deadline that is a few days before the one indicated by the client. This way, if something goes wrong, you still have a few days to tie up loose ends. To do this, break your project down into smaller pieces and estimate how long each piece will take, giving yourself about 15% more time than you realistically think it will take. This way, you can adjust to any delay or finish early to the delight of your customers.

5. Have a clear result

Finally, you and your client must agree on what exactly the end result will be. This way, there will be no disagreements about what you are supposed to have accomplished and when. When you deliver a project that the customer did not request, you will have to go back and do additional work to correct the error, requiring more time spent on the project.
